Championship Series Match Report
Skirlaugh vs West Hull – Sunday 13th July
Final Score: Skirlaugh 22 – 26 West Hull

Skirlaugh returned to home turf for their first fixture of the Championship Series, taking on a strong and determined West Hull side. In what proved to be a hard-fought battle from start to finish, both teams showed grit, physicality, and flashes of quality in a game that went right to the wire.

It was West Hull who struck first, capitalising on a blocked kick deep in Skirlaugh territory. The deflected ball landed perfectly for a lead runner who went over under the sticks to open the scoring. Skirlaugh responded well, growing into the game with increasing control and pressure. Tries from Sitch and 2 tries for Taylor, combined with accurate kicking from Baker, saw the home side take a deserved 16–6 lead.

However, West Hull stayed in the fight and managed to cross the line just before half time, narrowing the margin to 16–12 and setting up a tense second half.

The second period was scrappy and fiercely contested. Skirlaugh found themselves on the back foot defensively, with West Hull piling on the pressure. A covering tackle on the wing – judged high as the attacker fell – saw Skirlaugh reduced to 12 men with a 10-minute sin bin. West Hull made the most of the extra man, working the overlap well to score in the corner and edge ahead 18–16.

Discipline and a string of 50/50 forward pass decisions didn’t go Skirlaugh’s way, further reducing them to 11 players. West Hull capitalised once again, extending their lead to 24–16.

Despite the setback, Skirlaugh refused to lie down. A sharp attacking move saw Sissions dive over in the corner to bring the score back to 24–22 and shift the momentum. With the home crowd behind them, Skirlaugh surged forward. Beet looked to have scored after diving for the line and rebounding off the post protector for what would have been a try under the posts, but to the disbelief of the crowd, it was ruled a knock-on in the act of grounding.

In the final minutes, West Hull added a penalty to make it 26–22, sealing a narrow and hard-earned victory.

Among many strong performances, Phillips stood out for Skirlaugh. Starting at second row, he was fearless in defence and relentless in carrying the ball forward. His effort and tenacity earned him the Coaches’ Player of the Match – a thoroughly deserved recognition.

The game ended with concern for a West Hull player who picked up an injury in the final play. Everyone at Skirlaugh sends their best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

With a break now ahead for the summer holidays, Skirlaugh will regroup and return fresh for the next stage of the competition. #Skirlaugh #U14_Result #U14_MatchReport
